Sub-total resection (resection of > 90% of the pre-operative buy Bindarit tumour volume) was achieved in 24 out of 59 (40.7%) operations. After surgical excision, 9/32 (28.1%) patients underwent adjuvant
carbon ion radiotherapy. The patients were followed up for a mean period of 36.3 months (range, 3-93 months) from the initial presentation.
Fifty percent of the patients had to be re-treated due to tumour regrowth during the follow-up period. Thus far, 3 patients have died from the neoplasms. The overall 7 year survival rate of 9 patients who underwent carbon ion radiotherapy was 85.7%. The rate was higher compared to that of others (76.4%). The 3 year recurrence free survival rates of carbon ion therapy treated group was 70.0%, being higher than that of the other groups treated with radiotherapy or untreated (57.1%, and 7.1% respectively). Log-rank analysis showed a significant difference in the recurrence free survival rates between the group treated with adjunctive carbon ion radiotherapy and the untreated group (P = 0.001146).
Surgical removal of the tumour around the brainstem and the optic nerve combined with post-operative carbon ion radiotherapy will improve the survival rate and quality of life of patients with complicated skull base chordomas.”
“We SC79 investigate theoretically
the surface states of three-dimensional topological insulator cylinder nanowires analytically and numerically. In contrast to the conventional semiconductor cylinder nanowires, these surface states exhibit unique massless Dirac dispersion and interesting transport properties. We find that the AZD5153 persistent charge current and persistent spin current, i.e., the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation, can be induced by the driven magnetic flux. The amplitude of persistent charge current shows an oscillating behavior with increasing the electron density. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3658853]“
“We conducted a multicenter randomized study in liver
transplantation to compare standard-dose tacrolimus to reduced-dose tacrolimus with mycophenolate mofetil to reduce the occurrence of tacrolimus side effects. Two primary outcomes (censored criteria) were monitored during 48 weeks post-transplantation: occurrence of renal dysfunction or arterial hypertension or diabetes (evaluating benefit) and occurrence of acute graft rejection (evaluating risk). Interim analyses were performed every 40 patients to stop the study in the case of increased risk of graft rejection. One hundred and ninety-five patients (control: 100; experimental: 95) had been included when the study was stopped. Acute graft rejection occurred in 46 (46%) and 28 (30%) patients in control and experimental groups, respectively (HR = 0.59; 95% CI: [0.37-0.94]; p = 0.024). Renal dysfunction or arterial hypertension or diabetes occurred in 80 (80%) and 61 (64%) patients in control and experimental groups, respectively (HR = 0.68; 95% CI: [0.49-0.95]; p = 0.021).
