proteins or interfere with antiapoptotic Bcl-2 proteins. Therefore, the development of molecules able to mimic the function of BH3-only proteins is considered a promising strategy to improve cancer cell response to treatment. Several BH3 mimetics have been designed and studied in various tumors, in both in vitro and in vivo settings. Some of them are currently being evaluated in clinical trials either alone or in combination with conventional anticancer drugs. BH3 profiling of cancer cells was introduced to better predict the responsiveness of tumor cells to BH3 mimetics combined with conventional therapies.

“Aims: Controversies exist on the role of physical activity on urinary incontinence (UI), and search on PubMed revealed no studies on UI in fitness instructors. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of UI among female group fitness instructors, including Pilates and yoga teachers. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 1,473 instructors representing three of the largest fitness companies recruited from 59 fitness centers in Norway. They filled in an online survey (Questback) about general health, educational background, and number of hours teaching per week. Prevalence of UI was evaluated by the International Consensus on Incontinence Questionnaire, short form (ICIQ-UI SF). Results: Three out of 152 men (2%) reported UI. Six hundred eighty-five women, mean age 32.7 years (range 18-68) answered the questionnaire. 26.3% of all the female instructors reported to have UI, with 21.4% reporting leakage >= once a week, 3.2% 2-3 times/week and 1.7% >= once per day. 24.4% reported the leakage to be small to moderate

and the bother score was 4.6 (SD 2.4) Ispinesib supplier out of 21. 15.3% reported leakage during physical activity and 10.9% when coughing/sneezing. 25.9% of yoga and Pilates instructors reported UI. Conclusions: This is the first report on UI among fitness instructors and the results indicate that UI is prevalent among female fitness instructors, including yoga and Pilates teachers. “Microstructures selleck compound of front-side Ag contact of crystalline Si solar cells fired at temperatures from below to above optimal were systematically investigated using advanced electron

microscopy. Ag pastes studied included commercial pastes and an experimental paste containing nano-sized metallic Zn additive. Microstructures of optimally fired cells determined from cross-sectional and top-view images were found to be consistent with a primary tunneling mechanism for current flow (a “”nano-Ag colloids assisted tunneling”" model) due to the lack of Ag crystallites connecting the silver conductor line to the silicon emitter. We mapped the evolution of the interfacial microstructures across the firing temperature window and correlated it with cell performance. Our result sheds light on the relative importance of the two current transport models as the peak firing temperature was swept from below to above optimal.

“Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film accounts for a large amount of polypropylene since it is well suited for food packaging films or industrial films, because of its high performance in terms of mechanical and optical properties. Recently machine speed has been increasing to obtain higher production rate and film thickness has become thinner Selleck Pitavastatin to reduce the environmental load. To meet the demands, many researchers have been investigating stretchability of PP by connecting the stretching force at the yield point and crystalline structure. Many other studies have been conducted regarding the surface structure of BOPP. “The effectiveness of compatibilizers in enhancing the dispersion of polypropylene (PP) at various molecular Vorinostat cost weights in recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) was elucidated. The idea of incorporating PP of different molecular weights evolved from the intention of simultaneously recycling the PET bottles together with the PP-based bottle caps, which are often of low molecular weight AL3818 solubility dmso (Mw). Three grades of PP with known molecular weights were blended with RPET at various loadings of compatibilizers. Morphological analyses suggest that the dispersion of the PP particles was more homogeneous, and the average particle size was smaller

when low Mw PP was incorporated. This indicates that the interaction between the compatibilizer and PP particles was more intense with the presence of a large number but shorter PP molecular chains. Moreover, specimens containing low Mw PP were found to remain homogeneous regardless of compatibilizer and PP content in the RPET/PP blends. The homogeneity of the blends significantly affected their mechanical performance as well. Higher stiffness, yield strength, deformability, and toughness were observed when low Mw PP was incorporated, regardless of PP and compatibilizer loadings. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. “The influence of isotropically directed deposition flux on the formation of the thin film microstructure at low temperatures is studied. For this purpose we have deposited TiO(2) thin films by two different deposition techniques: reactive magnetron sputtering, in two different experimental configurations, and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The obtained results indicate that films grown under conditions where deposition particles do not possess a clear directionality, and in the absence of

a relevant plasma/film interaction, present similar refractive indices no matter the deposition technique employed. The film morphology is also similar and consists of a granular surface topography and a columnarlike

“Intermediate band solar cells (IBSCs) fabricated to date from In (Ga)As/GaAs quantum dot arrays (QD-IBSC) exhibit a quantum efficiency (QE) that extends to below bandgap energies. However, the production of sub-bandgap photocurrent relies often on the thermal and/or tunneling escape of carriers from the QDs, which is incompatible with preservation of the output voltage. In this work, we test the effectiveness of introducing a thick GaAs spacer in addition to an InAlGaAs strain relief layer (SRL) over the QDs to reduce carrier escape. From an analysis of the QE at different temperatures, it is concluded that escape via tunneling can be completely blocked under short-circuit conditions, and that carriers confined in QDs with an InAlGaAs SRL exhibit a thermal escape activation energy over 100 meV larger than in the case of InAs QDs capped only with GaAs. A calculation based on diffusion equations involving 311 defects and boron-interstitial cluster models was employed to reproduce the diffusion profiles in silicon-implanted (intrinsic) and boron-implanted (extrinsic) silicon isotope superlattices, followed by annealing. “A modeling of organic field-effect transistors’ (OFETs’) electrical characteristics is presented. This model

is based on a one-dimensional (1-D) Poisson’s equation find more solution that solves the potential profile in the organic semiconducting film. Most importantly, it demonstrates that, due to the common open-surface configuration used in organic transistors, the conduction occurs in the film volume below threshold. This is because the potential at the free surface is not fixed to zero but rather rises also with the gate bias. The tail of carrier concentration at the free surface is therefore significantly modulated by the gate bias, which partially explains the gate-voltage dependent contact resistance. At the same time in the so-called subthreshold region, we observe a clear charge trapping from the difference between C-V and I-V measurements; hence a traps study by numerical simulation is also performed. By combining the analytical modeling and the traps analysis, the questions on the C-V and I-V characteristics are answered.
